Commitment Day- July 10, 2012

Yesterday was Commitment Day. Somehow, I found enough guts to sign up for my first Half Marathon. This wouldn't be such a big deal if I were a runner. So in order to understand where I'm at now we must go back in time. My family has a long standing joke that we got the Harrington(my mother's side of the family) genes and that exercise was not in those genes. I grew up 'active' as a kid in softball & cheerleading in Little League but I never got into competitive sports in junior high or high school.

After high school, I spent a year working at a ministry (Teen Mania Ministries) in the Honor Academy in Texas. It was a year of discipline for me- spiritual, physical, emotional, etc. (I'm not a very disciplined person on my own.) In that year, I woke up almost every day at 5am to run with all the interns. This wasn't by choice...but a mandatory exercise. We ran every morning to train to climb Pike's Peak (14,114 elevation). Pike's Peak was a great journey for me but it was quickly overshadowed by nasty altitude sickness (all the way down the mountain). In addition to Pike's Peak, I also ran my first 5K that year. The discipline was great but solely because it was forced on me- as I said I'm not a disciplined person by nature.

After my year at HA, I went to college in South Florida. Surrounded by wealth, the beach and lots of skinny blondes, it was easy to feel compelled to become one (well maybe not the wealth factor- afterall I was just a college student!). Weight has never been a big struggle for me growing up. I was blessed to not be overweight but I've always had more loving around my waist than I wanted. But I also have always had a love for ice cream and anything sweet. I never learned the discipline to eat right. In my house it was always sweets over fruits. My friends joke with me because I still don't know all the melons! So in college, I was the tiniest I've ever been. However, not because I worked out or ate healthy but moreso because I didn't eat much! I learned the "Palm Beach" diet. It's funny because looking back I know that I didn't eat 3 meals a day and I was smaller but the food that I was eating was horrible for me! Aside from my staple Tuna & Wheat Thins, almost every other meal would include fried chicken! HA! Anyways, the point is that I haven't ever been disciplined to eat healthy and workout.

Once I got married, I saw the weight gain over the years. However, the closer that I got to age 30 the more I saw how my body was changing. The extra loving around my stomach wasn't going away as quickly. During my last semester of grad school, I signed up to run a Disney 5K with my sister and best friend (Becca). At the time, we all lived in three different cities in Florida so we never got to train together. From the day that I signed up for the race, I had less than 2 months to train by myself. At the time, my husband had already relocated to Texas so I was living alone. I had a crazy semester with grad school and working full-time in my clinical internship. However, I found the energy and discipline to run at night. We ran the 5K and I loved it. Okay well maybe love is too strong of a word. Just like the training, I hated every moment of running but LOVED the feeling afterwards. I felt accomplished and energiezed. Unfortunately, the running stopped after that 5K.

I finished grad school and moved away. I wanted to pick up running again in Texas but the summer heat (100-110) was just too much for me. In January 2012, I started signing up for 5K's again. This time I got to run with my husband. We are at different paces so I let him run ahead! Starting last fall, I also started going to a gym class (1-2) a week at my work. The idea of a half-marathon has always sounded cool to me. The idea of running it to say that I've completed it and adding the 13.1 sticker to my car has always been a great image. However, I'm not a runner! All of my 5K's have been a mix of jogging and walking. I can never seem to get the breathing down right so I walk. So I've 'loosely' added a Half Marathon to my on-going bucket list in my head. (Loosely meaning if I got around to it one day--great!)

Fast forward to May 2012. Erick & I went to visit our best friends in Virginia. Becca ran the Disney 5K with me in March 2011. Since then, I moved to Texas and she moved to Virginia. She started talking with me about the idea of a 1/2. I've known for a while that IF I were to ever attempt a half-marathon the Disney Princess one would be the one I'd want to do. 1) It's a fun run. 2) It's mostly women--PRINCESS themed. 3) There are characters 4) I've already ran one Disney race and 5) Hello-it's DISNEY! They always know how to do things! So she started pushing for it encouraging it! So why not run the Disney Princess 1/2 in 2013? Okay well I can give you lots of reasons why not but then I wouldn't be anywhere closer to my goal.

I've continued to be consistent with my gym class 2x a week for the last two months and started running 2-3 a week. My biggest accomplishment was running 3 miles non-stop last week. Like I said, I've always done a mix of walking/jogging and can't get the breathing thing down. I'm still working on the breathing! Erick & I are running a 5K this weekend (Too Hot to Handle- appropriately named for the Texas summer heat). My plan is to conintue signing up for 5k's and add in an 8k, 10k and 15k if I can find some before the big race. I've learned that my motivation comes by signing up for the race and then running.

So there you have it...Commitment Day 2012--I signed up for the 2013 Disney Princess in February 2013 (225 days away). So the three of us who set out for a Disney 5K in March 2011 will now be running (God-willing) the Disney Half in 2013! Now instead of training in three different cities, we'll be training in three different states (sad). As I continue into the 30's (not feeling like it's the new 20's), my personal goal is to become more fit. I'm learning that there are some things in life that I just can't control (as much as I'd love to) but there are some things that I can. So I choose today to take control of my weight and health. Of course, I'd love to lose 10-15 lbs but my main goal is to become fit and feel better about myself. I want to become a healthier individual now so that I won't have to face additional health problems in the future. It really is a life-style change...one step at a time!

Finding the Right Case

Recently Erick & I decided to be a family again. Well let me explain…we’ve always been a family, of course, but I’m referring to our cell phone plan. When Erick moved to Texas (11 months before me) he switched to Verizon while I stayed on AT&T. He wasn’t happy with AT&T’s service in San Antonio which we find ironic because their headquarters was here before it moved to Dallas (quick fact). Erick liked the new service with Verizon but wasn’t happy with the Blackberry. He switched to Verizon before they offered the iPhone so he gave me his iPhone 3 while he started a new love-hate relationship with the blackberry. Meanwhile, I was content with AT&T as I’ve had them since my first phone- the beloved Nokia— in 2000- plus I had the iPhone.  It took some convincing but after the temptation of the iPhone 4s (SIRI!) and a quick poll to my family & friends to find out that most of them have Verizon…I took the plunge. So after almost 2 years being on separate plans we decided to start a family plan again. We are now both happy owners of the iPhone 4s and I have to admit—I have been impressed with Verizon’s full bars in my office (aka dungeon).

As the proud owner of a new iPhone, the next step was to use protection- a case of course.  I’ve had in my mind for a while now that I’ve wanted a clear case. The reason being is that I’ve been inspired since I stumbled upon this on pinterest…

I realized this new project was perfect for me. I like to change my idea and style often so the thought of paying for one case but having the flexibility of changing up the design sounded amazing!
The selection at the Apple store wasn’t very great but I was happy to see the Belkin clear case. I had read reviews online and found that some clear cases turn a yellowish color over time. I know that Belkin is a good brand because I have a Belkin iPod case that has proved durable. So I settled on this case:

Belkin Essential 050

The next step was going to Hobby Lobby (my fav store) to pick out scrapbooking paper.  I chose 6 different prints that I liked. I then found laminating sheets that I thought my come in handy with this project. So here are my Hobby Lobby purchases:

I lucked out and the Belkin case came with a cardboard insert that was the exact size of the case. I used this as my template for the iPhone case inserts. I had to trim up the edges (especially around the camera) but it worked!
Tracing the template

Laminating sheets

 Triming around the camera

I used the template to cut out the inserts on all 6 pages. Then came the fun of laminating. I did run into a few hiccups here though.  1) There were only 5 laminating sheets and I had 6 pages. 2) I quickly realized that laminating sheets only had one sticky side.  Therefore the back side needed some additional tape to be fully laminated. Easy solution was that I used packaging tape to laminate the back side. The other problem wasn’t hard to resolve either. The peace sign page is a different texture (more like a waxy page) whereas the other pages are paper. I decided to use the cardboard template to make the sturdy backing for the peace sign paper. Also, since I was short one laminating insert, I just packaging tape to cover both sides of this cover insert. It worked!
Easy enough and this is what I ended up with!
Belkin clear case- $30 (could probably find cheaper online)
Scrapbooking paper- $2.33
Laminating inserts- $4.99
Total Project: $37.32

Texas Adventures

Okay so it's been a little while since I've updated this blog....I'm working on that! However, in my defense a lot has been going on since I've last updated. In January my beautiful nieces & sister came to visit Texas for the first time (more on that in a minute) and in February I passed the National Counselor Exam (on the first try!) to start the counseling licescure process in Texas. I will have to register as a LPC-i (Licensed Professional Counselor intern) and complete 3,000 hours under supervision before I can be fully licensed...but the exam was the biggest hurdle. After I passed the exam, we went to Dallas for a weekend to celebrate. Okay I've gone off topic...I will update about that later. For now, I want to share the Texas Adventures with my sister & nieces.

When we moved from Florida last year, my biggest fear was to lose my close relationship with Grace (almost 10) and Emma (7). I was blessed to live close enough to them to be able to see them every 3 to 4 weeks. I love every time that I get to spend with them- celebrating birthdays, going places together and slumber parties! Needless to say I was SO estatic when my sister booked a flight for her and the girls to come visit during a long weekend in January. It had been a long 8 months since I had the chance to hug & kiss my favorite beautiful girls.

The Texas Adventures including shopping, Build-a-Bear visits (like they don't have those in Florida!), eating....lots of good eating, shopping for true Texas 'get-up' for Emma, celebrating Emma's 7th birthday, ice skating and lots of Just Dance 3.

Our first stop Friday morning was the Magnolia Pancake Haus. We didn't take any pictures but the food was delicious! Grace couldn't understand why Haus was spelled 'wrong.' We had to explain that it was German. Blueberry pancakes, wheat apple cinnamon pancakes and apple cinnamon waffles...yum! With Erick being at work, we decided it would be best to start the adventures off by shopping! We enjoyed the beautiful weather at La Cantera. Emma picked out a Smurfette that she wanted from Build-a-Bear to use her Texas Money (Christmas gift to the girls).

Grace & Emma

Saturday we loaded up and went boot shopping! Yes it's winter but we're not talking about fall or winter boots....we're talking cowboy boots...Texas style. Emma wanted cowboy boots for her birthday! Grace wasn't interested in getting any boots but Emma was all about it! She went all out with the pink light-up boots, a bling bling pink belt and a pink cowboy hat!

She fell in love!

Pink light-up Cowboy boots (who knew?)
Even Heather tried some on
Gorgeous blue design
Picking out the right bling-bling belt!
And the complete outfit!

The girls wanted to go ice skating...a new favorite for them! Emma's birthday party was at the ice skating rink two weeks after their visit.

Emma is wild on ice!

Erick & Emma did a lot of Country Dance & Just Dance 3....while we enjoyed watching them!

Getting ready for Country Dance

I tried loading the video but unfortunately for your viewing pleasure, it isn't working. I'm sure Erick (and Heather who made an appearance in it) will be very relieved to know that. After Country Dance...they moved onto Just Dance 3.

These are my favorites from the weekend:

My wild (& beautiful) Emma Lou!
My beautiful Gracie Macie!

We also enjoyed a trip to the zoo with Quinton (Erick's friend) and his kids, Trinity (5) and Mason (3).
Animals at the zoo!

Of course you can't visit San Antonio without a trip to the Riverwalk & the Alamo (Emma kept saying the Elmo!). We actually only drove by the Alamo because seriously how much do a 10 & 7 year old care about a history lesson on vacation?!

Remember the Alamo (however I doubt he wore a pink hat to battle!)

Last stop before the airport was one of my favorite stops. One of the malls here has these HUGE cowboy boots outside and since we've moved here I've told Erick that we're going to take pictures there. I was even thinking of taking a picture there for our Christmas card this past year...well that didn't happen. Plus Erick hasn't been on board with the idea of pictures with HUGE cowboy boots. However, I knew two little girls who didn't mind! They were even psyched to take the pictures...even my sister was a good sport!

Needless to say we had an amazing time with them during their visit. Here are my last two favorites (yes I realize this post has A LOT of pictures...I know firsthand how long it takes to load them. Thanks for coming to visit Heather, Grace & Emma. Can't wait for our next Texas Adventures!
GOOD TIMES! XOXO, Aunt Haha

101 in 1001 Days

I thought that creating my 101 in 1001 days would be better than making some new year’s resolutions that I would ultimately forget about in a month.

So here’s the plan…

The Mission:
Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days.

The Criteria:
Tasks must be specific (ie. no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching (ie. represent some amount of work on my part).

Why 1001 Days?
The key to beating procrastination is to set a deadline that is realistic. 1001 Days (about 2.75 years) is a better period of time than a year, because it allows you several seasons to complete the tasks, which is better for organizing and timing some tasks such as overseas trips or outdoor activities.

Start Date: January 11, 2012
End Date: October 8, 2014
